Blizzard Conditions leads to a Future City
SIMulation Day
For snow-bound teams
The weather was less then cooperative during our January 22, 2005 Future
City Competition at COSI. Twenty-seven teams were able to make it in for the
competition but we felt something should be done for those teams that were not
as fortunate. For the purposes of giving teams feedback, recognition, and camaraderie
with other like-minded peers, the steering committee stepped up to the plate
and rather that bask in the glories of a successful event, turned right around
and began planning a SIMulation Day.
All the schools who could have competed (ie, had their maps and essays in) at COSI but were trapped
by ice and snow were invited. We asked some of the local judges to help, and enlisted
the assistance of a local school to host the event free of charge.
The event took place on Feb
19 at Walnut Springs MS in Westerville
and each team received individual personalized certificates, Future City
T-shirts, and was awarded a trophy. Large purple rosette ribbons were passed
out to teams that earned one of the 15 special awards and honorable mentions.
Lots of pizza, lots of kids, and lots of excitement! Team pictures were sent to
the teams along with judges score sheets, just as if they had been at the Jan
22 COSI event. We have gotten some really good feedback from the teams and
their families and it made the extra effort worthwhile. One such letter is attached.
Note: This unique opportunity
did allow for additional recruitment efforts. Apx. 75 people were in
attendance and Future
City brochures and
registration forms were distributed and put on the information table.
